How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

With the fall season in full swing and the trees beginning to lose their leaves, it will continue to get colder over the next several months. Sooner than you think, snowflakes will replace those falling leaves. Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against Mother Nature. Here are a few tips to improve the function of your roof throughout the winter, courtesy of the expert roofers from Doylestown, PA.

  • Clean your gutters. Clear out your gutters so they don’t overflow with rainwater which can cause severe damage to your home. Furthermore, debris and water can weigh down on the gutters, causing them to fall from where they’re anchored. Use a ladder and simply use your hands to remove whatever you find.

  • Remove other debris. In addition to your gutters, it’s key to clean the surface of your roof. Remove leaves, pine needles, sticks and other debris. These objects can retain moisture which can lead to mold formation, which can wreak havoc on your roof. If you feel comfortable, climb on your roof and use a broom or leaf blower to clear off the debris. Be sure to focus on the valleys which are most susceptible to water damage.
  • Clear vents. Inefficient airflow can lead to roof leaks as well as higher energy bills. Without vents at the soffits, ridges and gables of your roof, the hot air turns into moisture. This condensation can cause mold to form while rotting the roof’s support mechanisms. Furthermore, the moisture can freeze and crack the surface, resulting in leaks. Inadequate insulation and ventilation can prevent hot air from escaping. The second floor of your home will be warmer than the rest, causing you to overwork your AC unit.

  • Check for damage. Once the debris is cleared off, inspect the cleaned surface for any issues. Look closely for shingles that are missing, cracked, curled or frayed. Also be sure to check the flashing, around chimneys, skylights and vent stacks. Normally, when leaks occur, it’s related to the flashing. If you find any of these faults, call us!

Adhere to these tips to make sure your home is ready. By taking preemptive action, your roof, home and wallet will thank you this winter. For more information on residential or commercial roofing in the greater Philadelphia area, give us a call. Dial 215-848-4900 today!
